On Saturday 17th June 2000 I went to the grounds of Berkeley Castle to see an event styled on The Last Night Of The Proms, which was being performed by the English Symphony Orchestra (referred to as ESO for the remainder of this article).
The evening started at 7.30pm with a rousing performance of TCHAIKOVSKY's Marche Slave which incorporated parts of the 1812 Overture.
THE FULL SET LIST:
PETER ILYICH TCHAIKOVSKY | Marche Slave |
GEORGES BIZET | Carmen Suite No 1 Prelude, Argonaise, Intermezzo, Seguedille, Les Dragons d' Alcala, Les Toreadors |
JULES MASSENAT | Meditation from Thais |
JAQUES OFFENBACH | Overture to Orpheus in the Underworld |
JOHN SOUSA | Liberty Bell March |
INTERVAL | |
AARON COPLAND | Rodeo Buckaroo Holiday, Corral Nocturne, Hoe Down |
WILLIAM WALTON | Spitfire Prelude and Fugue |
EDWARD ELGAR | Pomp and Circumstance March No 1 |
HENRY WOOD | Fantasia on British Sea Songs |
PARRY ARR. ELGAR | Jerusalem |
ARNE | Rule, Britannia! |
During the performance of the 'Overture to Orpheus in the Underworld', WILLIAM BOUGHTON (the conductor) tried to get us to do 'The Can-Can' as this was in the Overture.
When they played the 'Liberty Bell March' the audience had to perform 'silly walks' because this piece of music used to be the signature tune to 'Monty Python's Flying Circus'.
I really enjoyed the performance and was surprised at how lively it was.
